Tax, National Insurance and student loan rates 2026/27
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the income tax bands are 20%, 40% and 45%, starting once your pay passes the £12,570 Personal Allowance.
Take-home pay in Scotland uses six Scottish income tax bands from 19% to 48%, so the same salary can leave you with a different amount.
National Insurance takes 8% of earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year and 2% above that, and stops once you reach State Pension age.
Student loan repayments are 9% of pay above your plan's threshold, from £25,000 a year on Plan 5 to £33,795 on Plan 4, and 6% above £21,000 for a postgraduate loan.
If you work part-time, a pro rata salary is the full-time salary scaled to your hours, and tax is worked out on what you are paid.
Hourly pay becomes a yearly salary over 52 weeks, so £15 an hour for 37.5 hours a week is £29,250.00 a year.
On the National Living Wage of £12.71 an hour, a 37.5-hour week comes to £24,784.50 a year before tax.
